About

I'm a photographer, independent researcher, and writer based in Lethbridge, Alberta. I work across the sciences and the humanities, and what holds it together is a single habit: following a question wherever it leads, and trying to be honest about what the evidence actually shows.

I was trained in biology, chemistry, and neuroscience, and I've never stopped being a researcher — just an independent one now, free to follow the questions that hold my attention rather than the ones a grant assigns. That freedom is the point. The subjects range widely, but the method doesn't: read the primary sources, distinguish what's demonstrated from what's merely claimed, and hold consensus, genuine debate, and overstated claims as three different things rather than flattening them into one.

Photography

Photography is the perceptual arm of the same instinct — disciplined seeing, deliberate framing, attention to light and detail. I shoot fine-art landscape and outdoor portrait work in southern Alberta, where the coulees and the prairie light reward showing up at the right hour. It is a personal artistic practice first; the commercial side of it lives separately, under Wild Photon.

Research and reading

A recurring subject of my inquiry is how humans form, hold, and revise beliefs — including my own. That thread runs from my background in neuroscience through the cognitive science of belief and into historical-critical study of ancient texts. I'm learning ancient Hebrew, Greek, and Aramaic (with scholarly German and Latin) in order to work from the texts directly rather than secondhand, and I'm especially interested in the cognition of the scribes who compiled the Hebrew Bible — how ancient people organized, remembered, and transmitted what they knew.

I care a great deal about integrity as a working practice, not just a virtue. Originals stay verbatim; anything derived is labelled as such; every claim traces to a source or is marked as inferred. Unknown is unknown. "I don't know" beats false confidence, and I would rather under-claim than dress up a guess as a finding.

Building things

I'm comfortable in code and hardware, and I build tools and systems to think with — including a long-running effort to prove that a home can be built largely from the ground it stands on, run on almost no energy, and still feel like living outdoors. That work lives underthe Eco-House.

Outdoors

Most of what I care about eventually leads back outside — hiking, geology, and the ecology of the short-grass prairie and the mountains beyond it. The landscape is both subject and teacher.
