Wild Photon
Outdoor portraits made for a wall, shot in southern Alberta light.
Wild Photon is my outdoor portrait practice, based in southern Alberta. The working line is “know the light, be the art,” which is less a slogan than a description of the constraint: the light in the coulees is only worth photographing for an hour or so at each end of the day, so that is when I shoot.
These are portraits, not event coverage. The distinction matters to how the work is made. A snapshot records that something happened; a portrait is meant to say something about the person in it, and to keep saying it for a long time. I make images of people to be looked at, not files to be scrolled past.
What the work is
Sessions happen at dawn and dusk in the coulees and the landscape around Lethbridge, when the low sun does most of the work and I do the rest. I plan around the light rather than the calendar, which means the good hours are narrow and I would rather be early than miss them.
The deliverable is physical. The point is a print that lives on a wall, framed and permanent, not a folder of high-resolution files that never gets opened again. I still deliver an edited gallery, but the print is the object the session is actually for.
Sessions
A few things I offer:
- Coulee Mornings — golden-hour dawn portrait sessions, delivered as an edited gallery and a signature wall print.
- Grad Minis — seasonal, back-to-back family and grad portraits, run in tighter blocks at the times of year they make sense.
- Select commissions — a limited number of other portrait projects when they fit.
